When God Steps Back: The Warning We Keep Ignoring

There is a moment in Scripture that should stop all of us.
Israel had just come back from battle. Four thousand soldiers were dead. The elders gathered. And they asked a question.
But it was the wrong one.
They said, “Why did the Lord allow us to lose today?”
They never asked, “Where did we go wrong?”
That question reveals the heart.
People who want relief ask why. People who want relationship ask how.
When life collapses, we often search for explanations instead of alignment. We analyze timing. We blame strategy. We adjust methods. But Scripture shows us something deeper, God often speaks through loss before He speaks through removal.
God steps back before He steps away.
Withdrawal is warning. Distance is mercy.
Israel didn’t lose because the Philistines were stronger. They lost because God was no longer protecting what they stopped honoring. They reached for holy things without repentance. They treated God’s presence like a tool instead of a relationship.
And the consequences didn’t arrive all at once. They came in layers.
Loss. Silence. Then absence.
That’s how it works now too.
When God’s presence fades, routines continue. Scrolling continues. Life keeps moving. Consequences become familiar. Cycles repeat. Same situation, different face. Same exhaustion, different excuse.
The scariest place isn’t rebellion. It’s familiarity.
The moment you stop asking, “God, what about me displeases You?” is the moment presence begins to drift.
There is no Ark anymore. No tent. No mercy seat made of gold.
Now, you are the temple.
And dedication is no longer about location. It’s about condition.
This Feast of Dedication isn’t about remembering an event. It’s about responding to a warning.
Because the presence of God is precious.
And anything precious must be guarded.
Pain is a warning sent by God, maybe sometimes a blessing, maybe sometimes mercy. We don't need to know how to cope with pain. What we need to do is learn to listen. Listen to what the pain means. Listen to what God is trying to tell you 🙏🏿
Becoming too familiar with God will have you using Him like a tool other than a fulfilling relationship will push Him away slowly, but surely. God will be the front of my decisions.
